About the Kir

Kir is a sour apéritif cocktail featuring a base of white wine with a distinctive blackcurrant flavor from crème de cassis. It offers a balanced sweet-tart profile that makes it a popular pre-meal drink in France.

History

Originally known as blanc-cassis, the cocktail was renamed after Félix Kir, mayor of Dijon who popularized it in the 1940s. It was created as an alternative to red wine-based drinks during German occupation when red Burgundy was scarce.
