Borovička

A gin from Slovakia, 37.5–55% alcohol by volume.

Borovička is a traditional Slovak spirit similar to gin, made by triple distilling grain alcohol infused with juniper berries. It typically has an alcohol content between 37.5% and 55% ABV.

How it is made

Borovička is produced through triple distillation of grain mash infused with juniper berries. The process involves fermenting crushed juniper berries with malted barley, then distilling the mixture three times in traditional copper alembics. The resulting spirit, with strength between 35-50% ABV, is aged for 2-3 months before bottling. Some varieties are additionally aged for 2-3 years in small oak barrels, acquiring a golden color and vanilla and oak notes.

How it is served

Borovička is commonly served as an aperitif, either chilled neat, on ice, or mixed with lemon juice, lime juice, or tonic. Its characteristic junberry flavor and spice notes make it suitable for various cocktails where it can substitute gin.
