Plymouth Gin is a distinctive gin made in Plymouth, England. It comes in two strengths: Original Strength at 41.2% ABV and Navy Strength at 57% ABV.

How it is made

Plymouth Gin is produced at Black Friars Distillery, the only manufacturer meeting all requirements for the PGI status. It features a drier profile than London gins with an energetic taste and a balanced bouquet of juniper berries, cardamom, orange, and other herbs and spices.

History

Gin became popular in England in the early 18th century when government policy encouraged its production. The distillery in Plymouth began operating in 1793 under the name Plymouth, later known as Coates & Co. In 2008, Plymouth Gin received PGI status. The Navy Strength version was originally supplied to the Royal Navy, with a legend claiming that gin at 57% ABV wouldn't dampen gunpowder.

How it is served

Plymouth Gin is recommended to be served simply with ice and a slice of lemon. It is also used in cocktails, including Pink Gin which is featured on this site.
