Dark lager is a type of beer originating from Germany. It is made from malted barley with caramel or roasted malt characteristics, typically with an alcohol content of 4.2-6.0%.

Types and styles

Dark lager comes in several varieties. Münchner Dunkel is a classic dark lager produced near Munich with a malty character, ranging from dark amber to dark brown with red or garnet hues. Schwarzbier is from southern Thuringia and northern Franconia, darker than Munich Dunkel with a dry taste and noticeable roasted malt flavor. Dark American Lager uses two-row barley and corn or rice as adjuncts to dark caramel malt, with color from dark yellow to dark brown. Czech Dark Lager is characterized by color from red-garnet to black, caramel and chocolate aromas, and a sweet malty taste with pronounced hop bitterness.
