Johnnie Walker is a brand of Scotch whisky originating from Scotland. It produces both affordable varieties with at least 3 years of aging and premium aged whiskies, with most being blended Scotch.

History

The brand was founded by Scottish grocer John Walker in 1856. His son Alexander began experimenting with blending single malt whiskies. In 1867, Alexander created 'Old Highland' which gained popularity. The brand expanded by acquiring its first distillery, Cardhu, in 1893. By 1909, the company introduced 'Johnnie Walker Red Label' and 'Johnnie Walker Black Label', which quickly became successful. Today, Johnnie Walker is owned by Diageo.

Types and styles

Johnnie Walker offers various blends. Red Label is a standard blend containing 9 whiskies aged 3-5 years, with Cardhu as the base. Black Label is a premium blend with about 40 whiskies aged at least 12 years, known for its complex flavor profile. Other varieties include Green Label (15-year-old single malts), Gold Label Reserve (15 rare whiskies aged at least 18 years), Platinum Label, and Blue Label (16 rare whiskies with an average age of 25 years).

How it is served

Johnnie Walker whiskies are typically served neat in tulip-shaped glasses or standard whiskey glasses. Gold Label Reserve pairs well with dark chocolate desserts. Blue Label is particularly popular in certain regions and is often presented as a premium offering.
