Whisky is a strong aromatic alcoholic drink made from various grains including barley, rye, wheat, and corn. It originates from Scotland and Ireland, typically has an alcohol content of 40-50%, and is aged in oak barrels.
How it is made
Whisky production involves malting, fermenting, distilling, and aging in oak barrels. The taste is influenced by water quality, grain type, malting method, filtration, barrel characteristics, aging duration, still design, and bottling temperature. Many distilleries use wine barrels like sherry, madeira, or portwine for aging, which imparts unique flavors. Some whiskies undergo mixed aging, spending time in two different barrels before blending.
History
The first written mention of whisky dates to 1405 in Ireland, where monks produced it. In Scotland, a record from June 1494 mentions "aqua vitae" production. The distillation process likely began independently in different regions. By 1505, the Edinburgh Guild of Surgeons and Barbers held a monopoly on whisky production in Scotland, selling it as a medicinal remedy in pharmacies. In 1579, the Scottish Parliament banned whisky production by peasants and commoners, leading to the rise of small illicit distilleries.
Types and styles
Whisky varieties include malt whisky (made from malted grain in traditional stills), grain whisky (made from any grain, often in continuous stills, and rarely sold on its own). Combinations include single malt (from one distillery), blended malt (mixture from different distilleries), and blended (mixture of malt and grain whiskies). American styles include bourbon (minimum 51% corn, aged in new oak barrels), corn whiskey (minimum 80% corn), rye whiskey (minimum 51% rye), wheat whiskey (minimum 51% wheat), and malt whiskey (minimum 51% barley).
How it is served
Whisky can be served as an aperitif or digestif. Tasting often occurs in groups using a nosing glass, which has a narrow top to concentrate aromas, making it suitable for quality complex whiskies but not for cocktails or blended whiskies. The drink is enjoyed neat without ice or mixtures to fully appreciate its characteristics.
