About the Manhattan

The Manhattan is a stirred short drink combining bourbon, sweet vermouth, and bitters. It features a sweet, herbal profile with whiskey flavors. Typically, this cocktail is garnished with a maraschino cherry.

History

Popular accounts claim the Manhattan began at the Manhattan Club in New York City during the mid-1870s. Nevertheless, this account is probably untrue because earlier references to cocktails named "Manhattan" exist from the Manhattan area in the 1860s.
