About the Sazerac

The Sazerac is a traditional short drink cocktail originating from New Orleans. It features a complex character from its blend of cognac or whiskey, absinthe, and two types of bitters, creating a balanced and aromatic experience.

History

The Sazerac originated in New Orleans around 1850 and is named after the Sazerac cognac brand that was originally used. It evolved from using cognac to rye whiskey due to the Great French Wine Blight. After absinthe was banned in the US in 1912, it was replaced with anise-flavored liqueurs like Herbsaint. In 2008, it was proclaimed as New Orleans' official cocktail.
