About the Horse’s Neck
The Horse's Neck is a traditional highball cocktail based on bourbon. Its blend of whiskey, bitters, and ginger beer produces a refreshing yet spicy profile, enhanced by the fragrant lemon zest garnish that inspired the drink's name.
History
The Horse's Neck originated before 1900 as a non-alcoholic drink containing ginger ale, ice, and lemon peel. By the 1910s, people began adding brandy or bourbon to create a stronger version called a 'stiff horse's neck.' The non-alcoholic variant continued to be available in upstate New York until the late 1950s before disappearing. In the 1960s, the alcoholic version gained popularity in Royal Navy wardrooms, replacing pink gin as the officers' favorite choice.
