Bacardi is a brand of Caribbean rum that originated in Cuba in 1862. It is made through a process of distillation, carbon filtration, and special yeast cultivation, with Bacardi Superior being one of its most well-known products.

History

In 1862, Facundo Bacardí Massó and his brother José founded Bacardi Rum in Santiago de Cuba. They developed a new light Caribbean rum recipe through experiments with distillation processes and carbon filtration. Bacardi became the supplier to the Spanish royal family in 1888 and expanded internationally in 1910 when it began production outside Cuba in Barcelona, Spain.

History

After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the Bacardi family emigrated to the United States as the Cuban government confiscated their assets. The company continued operations in Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Bahamas, and the United States. Bacardi Limited was formed in 1992, merging five strategic business units, and has since grown to become one of the world's largest alcoholic beverage companies.

How it is made

Bacardi rum is made through a distinctive process involving distillation, carbon filtration, and the cultivation of special yeast strains. This process was developed by Facundo Bacardí Massó in the 1860s and has been refined over time to create the characteristic light flavor of Bacardi Superior, the brand's most famous product.

Types and styles

Bacardi produces various rum expressions, including Bacardi Superior (a light rum), Bacardi Gold (a golden aged rum), Bacardi 8 (an aged dark rum), and Bacardi Reserva Limitada (a premium aged rum). The company has also expanded its portfolio to include flavored rums like Bacardi Limón and Bacardi OakHeart.

How it is served

Bacardi rum is used in several cocktails available on this site, including the Buccaneer, Citrus Coke, and Limona Corona. It can also be served neat, on the rocks, or mixed in various cocktails. The brand's most famous cocktail association is with the Cuba Libre, which combines Bacardi rum with Coca-Cola and lime, though this specific recipe is not listed on this site.
