Harp Lager

A lager.

Harp Lager is an Irish light lager. It is brewed in Dundalk and, under license, in the UK, Canada, and Russia. The brand belongs to Diageo.

History

Guinness first brewed Harp Lager in 1960. The company hired a German brewmaster to adapt a Dundalk brewery for lager production. Guinness considered names like Atlas and Dolphin but chose Harp, after the Irish harp. The name links to a harp used by King Brian Boru. In 1961, a consortium of Irish and British brewers formed Harp Lager Ltd. The beer was sold in bottles until 1964, when keg sales began.
