Lager is a beer type made with bottom-fermenting yeast at low temperatures. It originates from Germany and accounts for about 80% of global beer consumption.
How it is made
Lager is made by cooling wort, adding yeast, and fermenting for about a week at 5-12°C. After primary fermentation, the beer is sealed for carbonization, then undergoes a cold conditioning process lasting approximately 21 days. Finally, it is filtered and packaged, though some unfiltered lagers exist.
Types and styles
Lager can be light or dark, including styles like American lager, Pilsner, Vienna lager, Märzen/Oktoberfest, and various bocks such as Maibock, Traditional Bock, Doppelbock, and Eisbok. Dark lagers include Munich dark and Schwarzbier.
How it is served
Lager is commonly served chilled and is used in cocktails including 110 In the Shade, A Beer and A Smoke, Americano Perfecto, Campari Beer, Diesel, One Sunset, One-two Punch, Pela Paha, and Strip and Go Naked.
