Saison

A pale ale.

Saison is a type of Belgian ale that was traditionally brewed as a summer beer. It has a yellow-orange color, high carbonation, and an alcohol content ranging from 5.0% to 8.5%.

How it is made

Saison is brewed using pilsner, Vienna, and/or Munich malts for color. Sugar, honey, herbs, and other ingredients may be added for flavor and body. It features noticeable hop bitterness and flavor, sometimes dry-hopped with noble hop varieties like Styrian or East Kent Goldings.

History

Historically brewed in Wallonia, Belgium, Saison was made in late winter or spring and stored for summer consumption. The higher alcohol content helped it last several months before refrigeration. Today, craft breweries produce it year-round in various alcohol strengths.

Types and styles

Saison ranges from 5% to 8.5% alcohol, with higher alcohol versions being less sweet and more bitter and acidic. Variations include Crabbelaer. French equivalent is bière de garde. Notable brands include Saison Dupont and Fantome Saison(s).

How it is served

Saison is highly carbonated with a dense, stable white foam. It has a fruity, hoppy aroma and a spicy, tart, fruity taste with citrus notes of orange or lemon. It is typically unfiltered and slightly cloudy.
