Tennessee whiskey is a protected style of American bourbon whiskey that must be produced in Tennessee. It is made primarily from corn and undergoes a unique charcoal filtering process before aging, resulting in a smoother taste than traditional bourbon.

How it is made

Tennessee whiskey undergoes a filtration process called the Lincoln County Process, where it is filtered through sugar maple charcoal at least 3 meters thick before aging. This step distinguishes it from other bourbons and gives it a smoother character and unique flavor profile.

Types and styles

The main brands of Tennessee whiskey are Jack Daniel's and George Dickel, with other smaller producers including Benjamin Prichard's, Chattanooga Whiskey, Nelson's Green Brier, Collier and McKeel, and Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. Gentleman Jack is a premium variation of Tennessee whiskey.

How it is served

Tennessee whiskey is commonly served neat, on the rocks, or mixed in cocktails. Popular cocktails featuring Tennessee whiskey include the Brown Bomber, Jack and Coke, Jackhammer, and Tennessee Mud.
