Asti is a sweet white sparkling wine produced in the Piedmont region of Italy from the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grape. It has an alcohol content of 7 percent.

History

In 1865, Carlo Gancia applied Champagne methods to Muscat grapes in Canelli. He used filtration to stop fermentation, creating a sweet sparkling wine called Moscato Spumante. Later, Federico Martinotti and Alfredo Barone improved the production methods.

How it is made

The wine is made exclusively from white Muscat grown in the Asti zone. The harvest is done by hand. The juice ferments in steel tanks at 20 °C. Fermentation stops when the alcohol reaches 7 percent. The wine is then filtered and bottled.
