Cortese di Gavi is a dry white wine produced in the province of Alessandria, Italy, from Cortese grapes. These wines are typically light, acidic, and very dry, with a long almond or citrus finish.
How it is made
The wine is made from Cortese grapes grown in 11 municipalities near the village of Gavi. The vineyards yield pale straw-colored wines that are traditionally served in Genoese trattorias and osterias. The production area received DOC certification in 1974, which was upgraded to DOCG in 1998.
History
Interest in these wines outside Italy grew in the 1960s and early 1970s, largely due to elegant wines from La Scolca estate. By the late 20th century, the appellation tightened quality requirements by limiting grape yield to no more than 60 hl/ha. Some producers began experimenting with non-standard yeasts and aging on lees to enhance the varietal character.
How it is served
Cortese di Gavi wines are best consumed young and served at a temperature of 8-10°C. They are valued for their ability to refresh in summer heat and pair well with seafood. Approximately 85% of the produced wine is exported, with the main markets being the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States.
