Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a dry red wine from the Abruzzo region of Italy. It is made primarily from the Montepulciano grape with a small addition of Sangiovese. The wine has a dark ruby color and moderate tannins.
History
The Montepulciano grape near Sulmona has been known since the Middle Ages. After World War II, the variety spread along the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo and became the most popular in the province. It is also grown in neighboring regions.
Types and styles
The wine has DOC status, which requires vineyards to be located at altitudes of up to 500 meters, with southern slopes allowed to reach 600 meters. The zone includes vineyards from all four provinces of Abruzzo. Wines aged at least two years, with one in a barrel, can receive the DOCG classification.
