French wine encompasses a wide range of wines produced from grapes grown in various regions throughout France. These wines come in different styles including red, white, rosé, and sparkling, with alcohol content typically ranging from 11% to 15% ABV.
History
The history of winemaking in France spans more than two thousand years. During the Middle Ages, consumers in England and other northern countries favored French wines, particularly the 'black wines' of Aquitaine and the light, translucent clarets of Bordeaux. The Dukes of Burgundy took pride in their reputation as 'lords of the best Christian wines,' while monks in Burgundian abbeys selected the best vines and refined winemaking techniques, essentially discovering the concept of terroir.
Classification
French wine is classified into four main categories. Table wines (Vin de France) make up about 38% of production and may be blends from different regions and years. Local wines (Vin de pays) account for about 15% and must meet strict quality standards from specific regions. Wines with controlled designations of origin (Appellation d'origine contrôlée or AOC) represent about 35% of production and are the highest quality category, marked by strict regulations on grape varieties, yields, and production methods.
Terroir and Appellation
Terroir is a fundamental concept in French winemaking, referring to the combination of soil, climate, and other environmental factors that influence wine characteristics. The appellation system, established in 1935, legally defines geographical boundaries and production rules for wines. France has 466 official AOC appellations, with regulations that may include restrictions on viticulture and winemaking techniques. The concept of terroar is most pronounced in Burgundy, where even adjacent plots can produce wines with distinct characteristics.
Winemaking Regions
France has several major wine regions. Beaujolais, located in the Saône valley, is known primarily for young red wines made from the Gamay grape. Bordeaux, one of the oldest wine regions, produces blended red wines from the Médoc area and sweet dessert wines from Sauternes. Burgundy, stretching nearly 200 kilometers, produces some of the world's most expensive wines with an emphasis on terroar. The Loire Valley spans nearly 300 kilometers and produces diverse wines including dry whites, rosés, and reds. The Rhône Valley, one of France's oldest regions, extends 225 kilometers along both banks of the Rhône river.
