Rumtopf is a German fruit preservation method where fresh berries and fruits are conserved in rum and sugar. The resulting mixture is typically consumed as a compote or used in desserts.

How it is made

Rumtopf is made by layering fresh berries and fruits in a clay pot with sugar. After the fruit releases its juice, rum is added, ensuring the alcohol content is at least 54%. Additional fruits are added as they ripen, always keeping them submerged in liquid. The final mixture is stored in a cool place until winter.

How it is served

Rumtopf is served as a compot or used as an ingredient in desserts and ice cream. The preserved fruits can be enjoyed on their own or incorporated into various sweet dishes.
