About the Daiquiri

The daiquiri is a sour cocktail that combines rum with the tartness of lime juice and sweetness of sugar syrup. This simple yet balanced drink offers a refreshing citrus character with the distinct flavor of rum as its base.

History

The daiquiri was invented by American mining engineer Jennings Cox in Cuba around the time of the Spanish-American War in 1898. Originally served over cracked ice with a spoon to frost it, the drink evolved to be shaken with shaved ice and strained into a coupe glass. It was later refined and popularized in Havana by Emelio Gonzalez and Constantino Ribalaigua Vert.
