About the Navy Grog

The Navy Grog is a complex tiki sour cocktail with a rum base. It combines three types of rum with lime juice, grapefruit juice, soda water, and honey for a sweet yet tart tropical flavor. This potent drink was created by Donn Beach for his Polynesian-themed restaurants and became a signature tiki libation.

History

The Navy Grog was created by Donn Beach, who originated the tiki cultural fad of the 1940s and 1950s. It was served at his Polynesian-themed Don the Beachcomber restaurants and later became popular in other tiki establishments. The name 'grog' references the original Royal Navy drink of water and rum introduced by Admiral Edward Vernon in 1740.
