About the Last Word

This sour, herbal cocktail contains gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and lime juice. The combination creates flavors that are botanical, sweet, and tart. Preparation involves shaking with ice and straining into a saucer glass.

History

The Last Word was created at the Detroit Athletic Club during the 1910s, just before Prohibition began. The drink disappeared from popularity for many years. In the 2000s, it was rediscovered by Seattle bartender Murray Stenson and appeared in cocktail books, bringing it back into the spotlight.
