Albanian wine is an alcoholic beverage made from grapes grown in Albania. The country has a long winemaking tradition dating back to pre-Roman times, with production areas across different altitudes and terrains. Albanian wine typically has moderate alcohol content, similar to most table wines.
History
Winemaking in Albania has a long history, possibly dating back to the 8th century BCE when Illyrians produced wine independently of neighboring peoples. The region is one of the few where grapevines survived the glacial period. During the Ottoman period, winemaking declined but persisted in some Christian regions. After World War II, vineyards expanded significantly, covering up to 20,000 hectares, though production was primarily for domestic consumption. After the transition to a market economy in the 1990s, many vineyards were abandoned, but recently local farmers have begun professional winemaking again.
Regions and grape varieties
Vineyards are cultivated throughout Albania, divided into four vegetation zones: coastal plains, hills up to 600 meters, foothills up to 800 meters, and mountain areas up to 1,300 meters. Important wine regions include areas around Shkodra, Tirana, Berat, Durrës, Korça, and Lushnja. Albania preserves several local grape varieties, including white Pulës, Debinë e bardhë, Shesh i bardhë, and red Debinë e zezë, Kallmet, Serina, Shesh i zi, and Vlosh. The most common variety is Shesh, accounting for up to 35% of plantings.
Production and consumption
Only about 20% of the grape harvest is used for wine production, with the rest sold as table grapes or used for making rakia (a traditional grape brandy). Domestic wine consumption is relatively low at about three liters per person annually. Albanian wine exports remain minimal, with imports significantly higher. Many winemakers lack qualified expertise, and products often don't undergo quality control or meet label specifications. Despite these challenges, vineyard areas are gradually expanding with support from research organizations.
