Morellino di Scansano is a dry red wine from Tuscany, Italy. It is primarily made from Sangiovese grapes, with small additions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other local varieties. The wine has an alcohol content of at least 12.5%, with Riserva versions at 13%.
How it is made
The wine is produced from Sangiovese grapes (minimum 85%), with Cabernet Sauvignon (maximum 10%), Merlot (maximum 5%), and other local grape varieties (maximum 15% total). The grape yield is limited, and the wine can be aged in stainless steel tanks. Riserva wines must be additionally aged in wooden barrels for at least 1 year, with a total aging period of at least 2 years.
History
Morellino di Scansano received the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) classification in 2007. This is a relatively recent achievement for the wine, as it obtained Italy's highest wine qualification only in the 21st century.
Types and styles
The wine ranges in color from bright ruby to dark garnet. It features light tannins and woody notes in its flavor profile. There are two main styles: the standard Morellino di Scansano and the Riserva version, which has a higher alcohol content and longer aging period.
