Light beer is a beer style with lower alcohol or calorie content than regular beer. It originated in the United States and typically has an alcohol content of around 4.2%.

History

The term 'light beer' was first used in marketing in the 1940s by Coors Brewing Company, which briefly sold Coors Light before World War II. They successfully reintroduced it in 1978 as a light beer with 4.2% alcohol content. In 1967, Rheingold Brewery released Gablinger's Diet Beer, a light lager with 4.2% alcohol marketed for dieters. It was later acquired by Miller Brewing Company and relaunched as Miller Lite.

Characteristics

Light beer with low alcohol content allows consumers to drink more beer without becoming intoxicated. Lower calories are primarily achieved by reducing carbohydrates and alcohol content. While light beer may be chosen by those who want to control alcohol or calorie intake, it is sometimes criticized for being less flavorful than regular beer or having a 'watery' taste. Some view light beer as merely a marketing tactic, noting that some varieties like Bud Light have only 33 fewer calories than standard beer.

How it is served

Light beer is typically served chilled and can be enjoyed on its own or with food. It is also used in various cocktails such as Bullet To the Head, Burning Dr. Pepper, Summer Breeze, and others, offering lighter options for mixed drinks.
