Stout is a dark beer style from the United Kingdom, made with roasted barley that gives it a coffee-like flavor. It typically has an alcohol content of 7-8% ABV and comes in various styles including dry stout, milk stout, and oatmeal stout.

How it is made

Stout is made with roasted malt that is obtained by roasting barley grain, along with caramel malt. The roasting process gives stout its dark color and characteristic coffee-like flavor. Different styles of stout may include additional ingredients like lactose for milk stout, oats for oatmeal stout, or chocolate for chocolate stout.

History

The word 'stout' was first used for beer in 1677, referring to its strength. Initially, 'stout' meant proud or brave, but later came to mean strong. In the 18th century, stronger versions of porter were called 'stout-porter,' and the terms became associated. By the late 19th century, stout was considered a medicinal drink recommended by doctors for recovery. Guinness began using 'stout' for their porter in 1820, and it became synonymous with dark beer rather than just strong beer.

Types and styles

Dry stout, also known as Irish stout, has a drier taste than English sweet stout and is the most common style. Milk stout contains lactose, which adds sweetness and was once thought to be nutritious. Oatmeal stout includes oats that add smoothness to the beer. Russian imperial stout is a strong style originally brewed for export to Russia in the 18th century. Chocolate stout has a noticeable chocolate flavor from dark malt, and coffee stout uses very dark roasted malt for a coffee taste. Oyster stout may include oysters, while dessert stout is intentionally sweet to imitate desserts.

How it is served

Irish stout is often served with a nitrogenated pour to create a creamy texture and long-lasting head. It can be enjoyed neat or paired with food. On this site, stout is used in cocktails such as De Ghentsche Moale, Baverniess, Irish Russian, Piña Colada (beer), St. James's Flip, and the Road To Tipperary.
