About the Negroni

The Negroni is a bitter, aromatic short drink that serves as an excellent aperitif. Made with equal parts gin, red vermouth, and red bitter, it offers a complex balance of botanical, herbal, and citrus flavors. This cocktail is known for its distinctive bitter character that stimulates the appetite before a meal.

History

The Negroni originated in Italy in the late 1940s and gained popularity in the 1950s. Its exact origins are uncertain, though early recipes differed from the modern standard. The drink evolved from similar cocktails like the Americano and Campariete, with the current 1:1:1 ratio becoming standard by the mid-1950s. The name first appeared in print in 1947 for a drink close to the modern version.
