Vodka is a strong alcoholic beverage made by distilling fermented grains, potatoes, or other agricultural products. It typically has an alcohol by volume of 40% and is known for its neutral flavor profile, making it versatile for cocktails and straight consumption. The spirit has its origins in Eastern Europe, particularly Russia and Poland.

How it is made

The production of vodka involves preparing purified water and mixing rectified or distilled ethyl alcohol from food raw materials with this water. The water-alcohol solution is then treated with activated carbon or modified starch, filtered, and any recipe-specific ingredients are added. After mixing and final filtration, the vodka is bottled. This process results in a clear spirit with minimal flavor characteristics beyond the alcohol itself.

History

The term 'vodka' received its modern meaning in the 19th century, though production of distilled spirits in Eastern Europe dates back to the 14th century. In Russia, early production began in monasteries between 1440-1470, with state regulation following. The 40% alcohol standard was established in 1886 for practical purposes of taxation and consistency. Modern vodka production using rectified alcohol began in Russia in the late 19th century, with the term 'vodka' officially adopted in the Soviet Union in 1936.

Types and styles

Vodka comes in various styles and brands, including Absolut, Smirnoff, Cîroc, Grey Goose, and Stolichnaya. Some varieties have specific characteristics, like Żubrówka, which is flavored with bison grass. Other notable styles include flavored vodkas like Absolut Citron, and traditional varieties like Horilka from Ukraine. The range extends from premium brands like Belvedere and Crystal Head to more affordable options like Svedka and Finlandia.

How it is served

Vodka can be served neat, chilled, or at room temperature. It's commonly used in cocktails such as the Moscow Mule, Cosmopolitan, Espresso Martini, Screwdriver, and White Russian. The spirit's neutral flavor makes it an excellent base for mixed drinks, allowing other ingredients to shine. Vodka is also often served with food, particularly in Eastern European traditions where it accompanies appetizers and main courses.
